Best Supplements to Boost Your Immune System

Our immune systems weren’t created to fail us. In fact, our immune systems are so powerful and efficient, it’s difficult to deliver a “boost” in a traditional sense of the word. But, don’t lose hope — there are some things you can do to help yourself. After all, we wouldn’t be writing about the best supplements to boost your immune system without an answer.

What’s a supplement?

Before we jump into the few “best” supplements to boost your immune system, let’s have a quick chat about what supplements are in the first place. Call them supplements, vitamins, minerals, nutrients — they’re all different shades of the same color, in a sense.

A supplement is a compound that enhances or completes something else. Notice how we didn’t say supplements can cure or prevent something, namely disease. In the health world, supplements are typically available as pills, powders, and liquids.

Similarly, you may also know vitamins by their corresponding alphabetical letter. For example, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and so on. That’s good on you — let’s talk a bit more about these vitamins in particular.

Vitamin B6

The first of our best supplements to boost your immune system is good old Vitamin B6.

What does it do?

Vitamin B6 helps support biochemical reactions in the immune system. In other words, it helps make sure things are happening that need to happen.

Where can you find it?

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is especially important to get from your diet or supplements because your body doesn’t produce or store it on its own.

What does it do?

Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C can help combat illness. Or, at least, if you have a lack of vitamin C, you’re more likely to get sick.

Where can you find it?

Vitamin C is found in so many foods, it’s unlikely that you’ll need a supplement to fill any gaps. However, your body is more than capable of using how much it needs and then filtering out the rest.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is considered a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight off infection.

What does it do?

Vitamin E helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are formed when we convert food into energy.

Where can you find it?

You can find vitamin E in foods like nuts, especially almonds, as well as green vegetables like spinach and broccoli.

What else can you do to boost your immune system?

As we mentioned prior, it’s often your immune system getting you out of jams — not the other way around. However, a strong immune system is only made possible with a healthy body to house it. What else can you do to “boost” it, or it at least prevent it from stalling?

  • Wash your hands often: Wash your hands thoroughly; meaning, don’t be afraid to spend some time. Sing a tune, dream about your next meal, figure out a comeback that you should have said, etc. Warm water and a good soap are favorable versus hand sanitizer. While sanitizer sanitizes, it may not necessarily clean your hands as well.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze: On this note, do your part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (and anything else). Socially distance, wear a mask, and stay home or seek care when you feel sick. Period.
  • Try to be physically active each day: This doesn’t mean you have to train for a marathon at the crack of dawn for it to “count.” Being healthy is about finding balance with all levels of yourself, and it isn’t always easy. But, a few minutes of an activity you enjoy is better than nothing!
  • Eat a balanced diet: Make time for treats, but eat your fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats or proteins, and healthy fats. It’s about moderation, not perfection.
  • Drink plenty of water: Though delicious, coffee just doesn’t cut it, and neither do soda and juices. Try to drink the recommended eight, 8oz glasses per day, each day (64oz total). You may feel great with a little more or a little less, depending on other factors, like your activity level.
  • Sleep with intention: Getting a great night’s sleep every single night of your life just isn’t possible. However, you can help your body out and unwind by limiting distractions, noises, lights, and electronics prior to bedtime. Shoot for 7–9 hours each night, if possible. Sleeping in a cool, dark room is also best.

If you struggle with one or more of the above tips, start slow and start small. Visiting a physician regularly — and for any specific health concerns — can also work wonders for both your short-term and long-term health.
