Supplements can be an important part of a healthy routine. It’s often difficult to get all the nutrients your body needs to thrive from a diet alone, no matter how balanced it is. If you’re a vegan or have other dietary restrictions, for example, this makes it even more important to invest in the right vitamins and supplements. But are vegan supplements better for you?

The nutrients vegans (and others) need most

Whether you adhere to a vegan diet, are trying out a vegan diet, or follow some sort of other modified diet, this is information you need to hear. A multivitamin can cover most of the bases for anyone, thus the name. It’s a great place to start if you’d like an easy way to improve your wellness. However, in the next section, we’ll talk more about what vegan supplements have that make them special. As a general rule, though, here are the vitamins we need the most:

  • Vitamin B-12: Helps with energy, but also is directly involved with the formation of red blood cells, metabolizing proteins, and maintaining a healthy nervous system.

  • Calcium: Most people know what calcium does — you guessed it — it promotes healthy bones and teeth, muscle function, and heart health.
  • Vitamin D: Regulates mood and helps improve immune function.

Just because a particular vitamin or supplement was listed above doesn’t guarantee that you aren’t getting enough of it in your diet — vegan or not. In fact, some nutrients, like iron, can be harmful in excess. This makes it important to consult a healthcare professional. He or she will help you understand any drug interactions or other aspects of your health.

What makes vegan supplements special

Great, so now you’ve been refreshed on what vitamins and supplements should be starring in your diet. But that doesn’t cover our question: Are vegan supplements better for you? Potentially yes. Vegan supplements, especially if you’re adhering to a vegan diet, feature some key nutrients. These nutrients may be absent in most multivitamins — that is, zinc and iodine — which are important to have.

In addition, the notion that vegan supplements are plant-based is also a plus. Sometimes fitting enough fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet is difficult, so every little bit of plant-y goodness can only benefit you. While you can’t have too many plants, however, we mentioned above something to avoid. Vegan supplements may feature more iron than you may need. So, be sure to consult your physician.

All this considered, we’re not saying that you can’t find a great supplement or vitamin that isn’t vegan. Some substances are not kept “vegan” as easily as others, so it may be simply impossible. For example, vegan Vitamin D is created in a specific way for supplements. But, an additional benefit of vegan supplements that may make them better for you is that vegan practices typically involve special attention to responsible sourcing practices as well as testing for purity.
